This Hottly Contested Trend is Back for Summer

You’ve probably noticed that leather shorts are making a comeback. Are you on board with this impractical trend? We are! Let us change your mind about the leather shorts trend.

It seems like we will do anything in the name of fashion. Over the years we have hobbled down the street in the highest platforms, kept super low-cut dresses in place with double-sided tape, and squeezed everything we need for a night out into teeny tiny bags.

So when they tell you leather shorts are in for summer 2020, we know it doesn’t make a lot of sense, but we love them anyway.

Not to be Worn on Hot Days

These shorts are a perfect in-between staple however, we are not recommending you wear them in 90-degree heat. They look great with casual tees and tank tops but they also look nice with a crispy button-down shirt.

Sneakers, sandals, or heels complete the look but they also can be worn with leather boots. It’s easy to swap out a pair of denim shorts for leather ones and a nice pair has a buttery texture that feels very high-fashion.

It turns out many celebrities are fans of the leather shorts and have put together some pretty stunning outfits that we can recreate. If these outfits don’t make you want to invest in a pair ASAP then we don’t know what will.

Many of us remember this questionable trend from the early 2010s when the shorts were first paired with fishnets and ankle boots. The outcome came off looking a little bit like a brothel worker on her day off. Luckily, today’s leather shorts are a bit more sophisticated.

The look started popping up on the spring/summer 2020 runways at Salvatore Ferragamo and then at Valentino. This made us reconsider our previous choices when styling leather shorts and look at the piece in a new way.

It Looks Like This Look Will be Here for a While

For an easy outfit, keep things monochromatic. Black leather shorts with a black tee and black ankle boots looks elevated and much more stylish than the outfit would have looked in cotton or denim shorts.

Wear these shorts just as you would any normal pair of shorts. They look great with graphic tees or flowy tanks. Add a colorful blazer to create a structured look that is edgy.

Sandals, sneakers, loafer, boots, slides – you name it – they work with any footwear. Choose over the knee boots for an attention-grabbing look.

Wear them with a work-appropriate button-down or structured shirt. Balance out a statement top with a nude or tan pair of leather shorts. The shorts come in a variety of styles and lengths to complement your look. From leather hot pants to Bermuda shorts and everything in between.

They transition easily from day to night in case you don’t have time to change before hitting happy hour. Wear a pair with something sheer, sparkly, or puffy sleeves for the ultimate going out with the girls look.

These shorts will also easily transition into the fall. On cooler days pair them with a solid or printed pair of tights.

Clean Your Leather Shorts at Home

You don’t want to throw these into the washer with your jeans. Leather shorts will require special attention to keep them looking nice and keep them from cracking.

Never use bleach or ammonia-based cleaners as they can fade your leather. Also, stay away from too much water because it can cause water stains.

Clean spills on the leather immediately with a soft cloth. Leather is porous and will absorb liquids, causing a stain to form. Leather can also scratch, so keep sharp objects away from it. 

To clean leather, mix a solution of warm water and dish soap, dip a soft cloth into it, wring it out and wipe the shorts. You can also make a cleaning solution of one part vinegar to one part water. Use a second clean, damp cloth to wipe off the cleaning solution. Dry the pair of shorts with a towel.
